June 14, 2001

Members Attending: Rev. Richard Butler, Pastor, Deacon Charles Cornell, Donne Cutting, Nancy Dome Mike Holt, Judy Killeen, Richard Martin, Sharon McCann, Patricia Noone, Shirley Ormsby, Margaret Passafiume, Rosario Rizzo, Domenique Sexton, Mike Statkus

Members Absent: John Colonna-Romano, Marshall Cross, Paul Curley, Jackie Downing, John Slattery,.

The five absent had indicated in advance that they would not be able to attend.

Welcome:  The new members were all welcomed.

Minutes:            Minutes of May 10th accepted.  Noted that the previous minutes had been locked up in a computer glitch.

Review

The 40th anniversary and dedication of the new altar received good reviews.  Suggestion was made for a catechesis later on the significance of the chrismation of the altar.  One of the newspaper reports had missed the point – speaking of the “pouring of water”.

The plans for Theology for a Summer’s Eve were reviewed.  All encouraged to support and to attend.

Overview of the Council

Most of the meeting was spent – for new members and for old members – with an overview of the council, beginning with the video message from Cardinal Law.

Archdiocesan guidelines had been passed out.  It was noted that the mission statement had not been passed out and would be included with these minutes.

The Cardinal’s reference to the synod document suggested that this be obtained for the members.

Members discussed the methodology of recent meetings with a priority being taken after group discussion and then several months addressing the issue from the perspective of pastoral policy and vision.  (Thus, e.g. the social committee.)  Noted that even in agreeing to a priority, discussion is needed for often basic terms carry different meanings among the members.

A look at the coming year

Agreed to keep the present methodology with monthly meetings on the second Thursday with the September meeting focusing on an agenda item for next year.  Secretary notes will remain in this brief format from the pastor.  All want John to continue as vice-chair.  (In his absence, no objection was heard!)

Update from the pastor

No additional update was given beyond the encouragement of Theology for a Summer’s Eve.

Thanks

Special thanks were extended to Mike and Judy as they complete their terms on the council..
